Swara Web - An Educational Presentation of the Music of India
Welcome!
Swara Web is a compendium of information on the Classical Music of India. Initially the focus will be on the Hindustani Sangeet or North Indian Classical Music as this is my area of focus - then as time goes on I will be adding more and more information on the Carnatic or Southern Classical Tradition of India.
The information presented here is in no way a method of obtaining and sort of financial gain whatsoever - I am presenting this information for the soley educational purposes.
The musical notation system of India is quite different from that of Western Classical Music, although correlations can be drawn in many instances. There are many systems in use today to convey musical information in the written form and this leads to confusion. Swara Web will be using only one notation system as can be see below:
So, just like the Western system of using Do, Re, Me... Indian Classical music uses Sa, Re, Ga... also known as Sargam (click on this word - it will give you a chance to try out the glossary). Abbreviations for these notes are deployed to indicate specifics - like whether a note is flat or sharp or of a lower or higher octave and so on, stuff you don't need to know all about right now (if you don't already).
| Notation Chart | |||
| Scale Degree (Western) | Solfeggio (Do, Re, Mi...) | Sragam (Sa, Re, Ga...) | Note Symbol (SwaraWeb Notation) |
| 1st | Do | Sa | S |
| flat/minor 2nd | Re Komal | r | |
| 2nd | Re | Re | R |
| flat/minor 3rd | Ga Komal | g | |
| 3rd | Mi | Ga | G |
| perfect 4th | Fa | Ma | m |
| sharp 4th/flat 5th | Ma Tivra | M | |
| 5th | Sol | Pa | P |
| flat/minor 6th | Dha Komal | d | |
| 6th | La | Dha | D |
| minor/flat 7th | Ni Komal | n | |
| dominant 7th | Ti | Ni | N |
To distinguish between various octaves Swara Web uses the following system:
| Swara Web Octave Notation | ||
| S' r' R' g' G' m' M' d' D' n' N' S" | ||
| S r R g G m M d D n N | ||
| 'S 'r 'R 'g 'G 'm 'M 'd 'D 'n 'N | ||
| lower octave | middle octave | upper octave |
